How to Use an Electronic Program Guide (EPG): Setup, Timezone & Fixes

Electronic program guide display showing sports and TV listings

A complete television experience is impossible without an intuitive, accurate Electronic Program Guide (EPG). The TV guide transforms our 18,000+ live channel library into a structured program grid, showing you upcoming sporting schedules and catch-up availability.

However, IPTV guides occasionally run into issues: schedules display wrong times or certain channels show 'No Information'. In this guide and our common player error diagnostics, we demystify how EPG data travels and provide clear steps to fix schedule errors.

1. What is an Electronic Program Guide (EPG)?

The digital timetable that schedules and annotates broadcasts in how our streaming service works.

An Electronic Program Guide is an interactive on-screen menu that provides schedule listings. In systems detailed in our device setup guides, EPG data is formatted using XMLTV containing timestamps, show titles, descriptions, and category tags.

When you open your TV guide in apps like TiviMate on Firestick or Android TV, your device reads this structured XMLTV file and maps upcoming program blocks to matching channels.

2. How EPG Synchronizes with Your Channels

There are two primary ways your player receives EPG metadata, as explained in our M3U vs. Xtream Codes difference:

1. Automatic Sync via Xtream Codes API: If you connected using Xtream Codes from your subscription credentials, the application queries the server's XMLTV endpoint automatically in the background.

2. Dedicated EPG URL: If you use an M3U playlist or a standalone player like VLC on Windows & Mac, you manually provide an EPG URL fetched directly from the server on a recurring schedule.

3. Fixing Out-of-Sync Timezone Schedules

Is your program guide showing a match starting at 3 PM when it actually kicks off at 8 PM on our live sports channels?

The most common EPG complaint is an incorrect time offset. Because our server infrastructure serves viewers globally, server-side EPG timestamps are stored in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).

If your client player does not automatically compensate for your local clock, guide schedules will appear offset. Fortunately, as answered in our frequently asked questions, player applications include a Timezone Offset slider to rectify this in seconds:

- In TiviMate: Follow our Android TV guide to navigate to Settings > EPG > EPG Sources > [Your Source] > Time shift and adjust the slider until the broadcast matches your clock.

- In IPTV Smarters: Follow our Firestick setup guide to go to Settings > Time Format / EPG Settings > EPG Time Shift, select your hour adjustment, and tap Save.

Quick Calibration Method

To calibrate your time offset quickly, tune into a 24-hour news channel in our channel catalog that displays a live on-screen digital clock. Compare that clock to your guide listings and adjust your time shift accordingly.

4. How to Fix 'No Information' / Blank Guides

If your guide displays 'No Information' across channels, the issue stems from a corrupted cache, which you can resolve using our buffering and cache troubleshooting:

1

Force Refresh EPG in Player Settings

Open your player settings, locate the EPG submenu, and click 'Update EPG' or 'Clear and Update'. Allow up to two minutes for the fresh download to complete across all channel bouquets.

2

Verify Device Date and Time

Ensure your streaming device (Firestick, Android TV, or Smart TV) has its system date and clock set to 'Automatic Network Time' as recommended in our device setup guides. If your TV clock is manually set incorrectly, the app cannot match live timestamps.

3

Clear App Cache on Android / Fire TV

If the XMLTV file was partially downloaded during a Wi-Fi drop, it may be stuck in temporary memory. Go to Device Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > [Your Player] > Clear Cache, or review our player error troubleshooting guide.

4

Assign EPG Manually (In TiviMate)

If an individual niche channel lacks guide data, long-press the channel name in TiviMate, select 'Assign EPG', and pick the correct regional guide feed manually from our live channel catalog.

5. Best Player Features: Catch-Up, Reminders & Search

A properly configured EPG unlocks advanced features inside modern IPTV players on all compatible streaming devices:

1. Catch-Up & Replay: On channels marked with a clock icon on our subscription plans, scrolling backwards in the EPG grid allows you to replay sporting events aired over the past 24 to 72 hours.

2. Program Reminders: Clicking on an upcoming match in the guide lets you set an on-screen alert that switches channels when kickoff begins during your 24-hour test line or active subscription.

3. Global Search: Instead of searching by obscure channel numbers, search for tournament names in our full channel search; the player searches across your entire EPG to find which channel is broadcasting the content.

6. Daily EPG Best Practices

To keep your TV guide fast, set update intervals to 'Once per day on app startup' to preserve bandwidth outlined in our network speed requirements.
